Spiritual Voices, Spiritual Struggles and Spiritual Direction: Navigating Mental Health in Spiritual Accompaniment

This workshop explores the intersection of mental health and Christian spirituality within the context of Spiritual Direction. Focusing on two main themes - hearing voices, demonic, and divine (whether or not associated with a mental health diagnosis); and spiritual struggles, especially as related to mental health. The session aims to equip Spiritual Directors with a better understanding of these complex issues.

Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the types of voices and struggles they encounter in their work as Spiritual Directors, sharing experiences and insights. The workshop will provide practical guidance on how to respond to directees experiencing these phenomena, fostering a supportive and informed approach to spiritual accompaniment in the context of mental health concerns.


Chris Cook

Chris is Emeritus Professor in Spirituality, Theology & Health at Durham University and Honorary Chaplain for Tees, Esk & Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust. A past chair of the Spirituality & Psychiatry Special Interest Group at the Royal College of Psychiatrists,Professor Cook has been awarded the Canterbury Cross from the Archbishop of Canterbury in recognition of his work on theology and psychiatry, as well as the Oskar Pfister Award from the American Psychiatric Association. His recent publications include ‘Hearing Spiritual Voices’ (2023) and ‘Struggling with God’ (2023, with Hamley & Swinton).
