This workshop explores the intricate relationship between Spiritual Direction and mental health, participants will delve into the challenges of maintaining their own mental wellbeing as Spiritual Directors while also learning how to provide effective support for directees experiencing mental distress.
The session will equip attendees with practical tools for monitoring their own mental health and engaging in meaningful conversations about mental wellbeing with their directees. Through insightful discussions and exercises, participants will discover the unique contributions that spiritual direction can offer to those navigating mental health challenges.
This workshop is particularly relevant in the context of increased mental health challenges following recent global events. Spiritual directors will learn how to create a safe, non-judgmental space for directees, enabling them to explore their faith and mental health experiences in a supportive environment. By the end of the session, attendees will have developed valuable skills to provide spiritual direction that nurtures both spiritual growth and mental wellbeing.
Catherine Armstrong
Catherine Armstrong is an experienced spiritual director, retreat leader, and facilitator with a passion for mental health and spiritual direction. She holds a MA in Christian Spirituality with a special interest in mental health and has worked as part of an NHS Mental Health Crisis Team, bringing her lived experience of mental health disability to her work. Catherine was an Encounter Tutor for many years and now assists with LCSD safeguarding training.
