Spiritual Direction is typically understood as a one-on-one conversation and relationship, with God as an integral part. However, we can glean valuable insights from family therapy, which recognises that every individual is part of a larger system and brings their social connections and values into the room. It's crucial to be aware of these wider connections and influences, whether they're explicitly voiced or not.
This workshop delves into the intersection of Spiritual Direction and family therapy, offering rich insights for Spiritual Directors. Participants will discover the vital role of psychological contact between Director and directee, and how both are influenced by the larger 'systems' they're part of, shaping their experiences and perspectives.
The session introduces key concepts from family therapy that can enhance Spiritual Direction practice. These include innovative approaches to conducting sessions, facilitating change, and understanding diverse viewpoints. Attendees will acquire practical skills, such as using genograms (family trees), to apply these insights in Spiritual Direction. This workshop aims to expand our understanding of the relational aspects of Spiritual Direction and equip us with fresh tools to become more effective spiritual accompaniers.
